FRAN'S TESTIMONIAL

Read about Fran's Story

“My bank has turned me down for an auto loan and a credit card.”

In January of 2014 1 lost $2,000.00. I had saved from working a second job  and had taken my car in the previous September to a car mechanic who kept it for 4 weeks. I put a down payment for the transmission I needed, but they never put it in. They also further damaged my car when they took off $361 dollars’ worth of splash guards off and never replaced them. Eventually I had to tow the car to another mechanic who put the transmission in 3 days, took pictures of the damage and spoke to the State Bureau of Auto Repair representative. I returned to the first shop 2 or 3 times every week and the manager only refunded me $900.00. This was becoming a big financial struggle to keep my car working.

I work in Pittsburg and live in Rodeo and I can’t take public transportation, so my choices for getting to work were limited. So I borrowed a friend’s credit to pay for this repair and paid it back in about 4 months.

I already had two jobs, and had to take a third one in March to pay for my car repair, which was about $6,000. I had the car serviced once and the struts replaced since then costing another $1700.00. The paint is peeling off the car and the catalytic converter needs to be replaced. I needed help!

In August 2014, I was invited to apply for a full-time position at my main job, where to qualify I needed to apply for credentials from the state. I was accepted to a UC Berkeley Extension credential program where I was granted preliminary full-time credentials. This program will cost about $3200.00 dollars and I have already completed 2 of the 6 courses required by 2018. I would not have been ableto get to work and go to school if I didn’t have reliable transportation. This has really given me a solid foundation.

My permanent full-time job is secure because of my job performance, including professional development courses and the success of my adult students. I am in a union, now have health insurance and am earning about $3,000 a month take home. I have been renting at my current residence since 2011.

Thank for your time and consideration and helping me build a solid foundation. As I look back I realize that I had no idea how much I had accomplished this year and I thank CHDC for helping me make it possible.
